Officials step up effort to build power plant in North Bergen

North Bergen officials are stepping up their effort to build an electric power plant in the city.
The proposed site for the Liberty Generating Plant is 94th Street. But many environmentalists say they are against the plan because the plant would supply electricity to New York but not New Jersey.
Local leaders say that the power plant would benefit the town by generating tax dollars.
“This will also help the infrastructure. It will help the roadways, the flooding and everything else,” says North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco. “This is a major project for North Bergen and for the people who live here.”
The plant still needs to be approved by state regulators before it can be built.
