Officials in Stamford announced the official start of the police department’s body-camera program Friday.

Stamford police patrol officers are completing training and will begin wearing the body cameras. The traffic enforcement unit has been piloting the program. 

Stamford police will join several other area departments in wearing the cameras.

Police won't have to say they're recording, but if someone asks they'll have to tell them. 

Stamford police officials and Mayor David Martin have spent the past three years working on making the program a reality. It is funded through a grant from the Justice Department.

The NAACP says it commends the addition of body cameras, saying they protect the community and the officers.
