A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for a new activities center for seniors in Westport.
The ceremony was held to mark the start of enhancements to the Westport Center for Senior Activities.
The town has provided $3.9 million to add more space for programs, an expanded fitness center, more parking and additional improvements to the facility overall.
The center currently has 2,500 members and as that number continues to grow.
"The town of Westport, including the board of finance, recognizes that seniors are valuable members of the community, so not only do we support the school systems but we also support the seniors in our community and this is going to be a place where seniors can grow, be vibrant, be challenged both mentally and physically on a daily basis,” says Susan Pfister, of the Westport Center for Senior Activities.
The Friends of the Westport Center for Senior Activities also has a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of some of the new amenities for the center.
Officials say the project is expected to be completed by January 2019.
