Loved ones are mourning a local firefighter who was killed in a crash in Fairfield over the weekend.
Austin Buoni, 22, came from a long line of firefighters. After graduating high school, the Stratford native became a volunteer firefighter at Pine Rock Park Company 4 in Shelton. He then traded helmets to volunteer at the Nichols Fire Department in Trumbull.
Early Saturday morning, police say Buoni was driving over the speed limit on Kings Highway in Fairfield and slid into a utility pole. He died at the hospital.
Buoni leaves behind two younger sisters, his parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Relatives say he devoted his life to helping others both in and out of uniform. As an organ donor, they say they're able to find comfort in knowing his mission to help will carry on.
The crash remains under investigation.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with upcoming expenses.
