Stratford officials vote to eliminate magnet school, cut busing

STRATFORD -

Officials in Stratford have voted to eliminate a magnet school and cut busing.

Officials were escorted to their cars by police through an angry crowd after the meeting ended at Stratford High School. The board voted to switch Stratford Academy from a magnet school to a neighborhood school and cut back on busing across town.

Earlier in the evening, parents and students rallied on the Town Hall green in hopes of changing the board's decision.

Opponents say eliminating a magnet school and cutting busing is a return to segregation. But the superintendent says the changes are necessary to save money.

A board member said most of the changes will happen in September.
