Stratford Board of Education votes to eliminate magnet school

STRATFORD -

A Stratford Board of Education meeting turned into a shouting match Monday night after the board voted to eliminate the town's magnet school to save money.

The district says that eliminating the magnet school would cut back on transportation costs, as students are bused there from all over town. Another way to cut the cost of transportation, the district says, is to scale back the forced busing that had been put in place years ago to make schools more integrated.

The decision wasn't well received by many. Superintendent Janet Robinson was escorted out of the meeting by a police officer.

Parents and some students rallied ahead of the meeting, holding signs that said “no cuts” and “don’t de-magnetize.”

Robinson says the changes are needed to save money.

Parents who oppose the plan say all of the details haven't been disclosed.

Parents are also now left wondering what school their child will be reassigned to. A board member says that most of the changes will take effect this fall, while others will be phased in over time.
