Remains of Army vet missing since 2007 found in Manchester
Authorities say human remains found by an engineering crew in Ocean County this week are those of an Army veteran who went missing more than a decade ago.
Manchester Township police say the crew was working in a wooded, swampy area on Tuesday when members found a skull. They called police, and further excavation uncovered additional remains and personal items, including a pocketknife, watch and wallet.
The discovery led authorities to identify the remains as those of William Schmidbauer, a township resident who went missing in 2007. Schmidbauer was 64 years old at the time.
The veteran's remains were found about 1.5 miles away from his home, where he lived with his wife.
Schmidbauer’s wife reporting him missing from their Robin Street home in the Cedar Glen West section of Manchester Township on Sept. 23, 2007. Authorities had conducted numerous searches over the years to find him, including one staged last year.
Authorities don't suspect foul play, but a state police forensic anthropologist will examine the remains.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
