Gov. Murphy: 1 adult, 1 student killed in school bus crash on I-80
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says that at least one adult and one student were killed Thursday when a school bus collided with a dump truck on Interstate 80.
Murphy declined to provide the names of the people who died at this time.
The governor says that 43 other students and adults on the bus were injured and taken to six area hospitals to be treated for a variety of injuries. Some of those patients are critical, according to Murphy.
The parent of one of the students tells News 12 New Jersey that his daughter had a concussion and gave the hospital the wrong name when she was taken in. The father says that it took hours to find his daughter. She is expected to recover, but will need to be kept in the hospital overnight for observation.
The bus contained fifth-graders from East Brook Middle School in Paramus. It was one of three school buses on the way to Waterloo Village in Stanhope for a field trip.
The bus and a dump truck collided near Exit 25 around 10:20 a.m. in Mount Olive. The impact of the crash caused the bus to overturn and come off its chassis.
A student tells News 12 that after the bus flipped over that students had to escape through the windows and emergency exits. He says that many people were screaming. The student says that the other children were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
A portion of Route 80 remains closed while the accident is investigated. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and New Jersey State Police are investigating.
Students at East Brook Middle School were sent home early following the crash.
School officials say the school will be open Friday and counselors will be made available for the students who need to talk to someone about the ordeal. Evening activities for Thursday and Friday have been canceled.
