Authorities have identified the New Fairfield woman killed in Tuesday's powerful storm as a 41-year-old teacher.
Lauren Svendsen was a middle and high school art teacher in the North Salem School District in New York.
As News 12 has reported, she died at the scene when a tree crashed down on her car on Brush Hill Road near Gilotti Road. Svendsen's 3-year-old survived the impact, and rescuers pulled him from the vehicle. He wasn't hurt.
"Adored by her students, Lauren passionately taught them in a way that connected art and personal life," her district's superintendent said in a statement.
Supporters have set up a GoFundMe campaign to benefit Svenden's husband and her two sons.
"A family has lost a mother, a wife, and it's tremendously sad," says New Fairfield Selectman Khris Hall.
