Facing budget cuts, Helen Keller students find a way

Posted: Updated:
EASTON -

When budget cuts threatened to end some of their favorite after-school programs, a group of Helen Keller Middle School students turned to GoFundMe to raise money.

Seventh-grader Tate English helped spearhead the fundraising when she created the GoFundMe page last week. Since then, the students have raised $7,000 to fund extracurricular activities ranging from the garden club to the volleyball team.

The school's Parent Teacher Association has pledged to donate another $10,000 on top of whatever the students raise. The PTA president says 75 percent of the school's students take part in extracurriculars.

Their total goal is $22,000 to keep all of the programs.

"I personally think that it's extremely important," Tate says. "We can have time to socialize and spend time with our friends."
