Long Island teens who participated in the national March for Our Lives rallies against gun violence met with their local congressman Friday after yet another school massacre.
They first joined the nationwide walkouts after a gunman shot up a high school in Parkland, Florida.
Now, after a Santa Fe student killed 10 and wounded 10 more, some students are renewing their calls for new gun policies.
"There are definitely other factors, but guns are the root of this issue," says Lucy, a junior at Jericho High School. "Anyone who says otherwise is wrong."
Lucy's cousin Scott Beigel was among the victims in Parkland in February, she says.
"It's devastated my family," she says.
Since then, she has vowed to make gun reform a priority in her life. She met with Rep. Tom Suozzi in Glen Cove Friday night for a previously scheduled fireside chat on the issue.
"Keeping guns out of the hands of violent offenders, of domestic violence abusers, of people with drug and alcohol problems, of mental health issues," are among the main goals, Suozzi says.
Max Robins, a senior at Huntington High School, also participated in the March for Our Lives rally and met with the congressman.
"It's absolutely essential that we offer our thoughts and prayers to those in Santa Fe," he says. "We stand in solidarity with them. But standing in solidarity and offering our thoughts and prayers is only going to do so much."
"What we need to do," he says, "is make sure that these tragedies are not happening anymore."
