A vigil was held in Bridgeport Saturday to remember the victims of Friday’s school shooting in Texas.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal was among the officials who joined in a vigil at Curiale School for the 10 people killed and 10 others wounded, many of them students, when a gunman opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Texas.
Sen. Blumenthal says it marked the 22nd school shooting in the country since the beginning of the year, underscoring the need for the Republican-controlled Congress to take action on gun control.
“Bloodshed and heartbreak have struck Texas most recently but we know it well in Connecticut and that's why our hearts go out to them,” said Blumenthal.
Blumenthal went on to say that he thinks Connecticut has led the nation in the fight for stricter gun control.
Resident Tamela-Jones Walker has three young children and says she especially feels for the parents who lost their kids.
"To send your children to school and to understand that they're not coming back home, that's a really hurtful thing,” she said.
A school security officer at Curiale School said that keeping kids safe is his top priority. He also said that it's heartbreaking to know that more young lives have been cut short in a senseless act of violence.
"Continue to keep your guns,” said another parent in the community. “Nobody wants to take your guns, but you have to have some commonsense solutions that will curb this violence and that's only going to happen when you're ready to deal with that issue.”
