Law enforcement officers in Morris County are trying to determine who made a fake emergency call to police Friday evening.

Butler police say that a woman called 911 and said that her husband had shot her two children and was coming back to her home to hurt her as well. The caller gave a Butler address, prompting a large police response.

But police say that they determined that the call was a hoax and that no such shooting had occurred.

"These types of calls place the public in direct peril as emergency resources become needlessly involved endangering the public at large," Butler Police Lt. Mike Moeller told the Tri-Boro Patch.

The Butler Police Department, along with the Morris County prosecutor's and sheriff’s offices, are investigating the incident.
