Greenwich urges safety as boating season begins

Posted: Updated:
GREENWICH -

Officials and emergency personnel in Greenwich are offering tips to stay safe as boating season gets underway.

First responders are reminding people to inspect their boats before setting sail. They say it's crucial to check all of the vessel's safety and mechanical gear.

Officers say the majority of calls they receive are for mechanical issues, some which could've been prevented. On the medical side of things, they say staying hydrated and driving sober is key.

"If you have any signs or symptoms, or any issues, call 911, or call us on the marine frequency, which is channel 16," says Dennis Fogler, of Greenwich EMS.

First responders will be patrolling the waters from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the season.

During the weekend leading up to the Fourth of July, officers say they'll be participating in a national event called "Operation Dry Water," in which they will be conducting boat stops and inspections.
