Authorities say a body was discovered in a wooded area of Roosevelt Wednesday, just hours after police charged an alleged MS-13 member in the murder of another teenage Roosevelt resident.
Police say the body, believed to be male, was found in Roosevelt Preserve Park after an all-day search. They say the victim was five feet down into the ground, and is believed to be the victim of MS-13 violence.
Authorities say they received a tip about the unidentified body after the arrest of Josue Figueroa-Velasquez, 18, of Freeport. Figueroa-Velasquez was arrested Tuesday in the killing of 16-year-old Angel Soler, of Roosevelt. The latest body was found 2 miles from where Soler was found in October 2017.
Soler had been missing for several months before his body was found in a wooded area near West Greenwich Avenue in Roosevelt. Police say the 16-year-old was attacked by a group of people and hacked to death with a machete. His body was found under a slab of concrete.
Authorities say Soler was lured into the woods by MS-13 gang members Victor Lopez, 19, and David Sosa-Guevara, 26. The two were named in a 17-person indictment several months ago.
Court documents say Figueroa-Velasquez acted in concert with four other people.
Nassau police say Figueroa-Velasquez was in ICE custody when they arrested him and was about to be deported to El Salvador. Prosecutors in Hempstead court called him a member of MS-13.
Figueroa-Velasquez was remanded without bail after his arraignment.
The commanding officer of Nassau's Homicide Squad said they are always pursuing more arrests in MS-13 killings.
"These cases are never closed. These types of acts are not done by one person,” said Detective Lt. Steven Fitzpatrick.
