The search for a 10-year-old boy in the waters off Long Beach was called off Wednesday morning.

The boy went missing Tuesday while swimming with his 11-year-old brother.

The Coast Guard says searchers from multiple agencies covered more than 310 nautical miles for a total of 22 hours during the rescue effort.

Police say the boy and his 11-year-old brother took the n15 bus alone from Hempstead to Long Beach. The boys went swimming near the jetty by Ocean Beach Park. City officials said around 6 p.m., the water got rough and the boys struggled to get out. The 11-year-old managed to get back to the shore, but his brother was not found.

Lifeguards are not full-time in Long Beach until Friday.

Officials say conditions were challenging for searchers who were concentrating their efforts near the jetty.

“We had Nassau divers in there for 45 minutes and the conditions were too rough under the jetty for them to stay down,” said Paul Gillespie, of the Long Beach Patrol.

The boys’ mother was seen on the boardwalk speaking with searchers. She did not speak to reporters.

It’s not yet clear how the boys were able to get on the bus and head to the beach alone.
