Bridgeport police have charged a Trumbull woman in connection with a December crash that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured four others.
Police say Marie Tufaro, 41, had several drugs in her system, including oxycodone, at the time of the crash. They say Tufaro was speeding at 70 mph when she drove the wrong way on Huntington Turnpike, where she hit 50-year-old Shylane Crooks, of Bridgeport, who was crossing at Priscilla Street.
Tufaro then allegedly continued driving and crashed into an SUV that was leaving a gas station.
Denise Charles, Crooks' sister, told News 12 that she forgives Tufaro because she knows the crash wasn't intentional. But she added that the charges don't make the pain any easier.
"Some days i just sit there and I think about it and it crushes me," Charles says. "But then it's time to have to go on."
Tufaro faces charges that include manslaughter, assault with a motor vehicle, reckless driving and possession of drugs. She was released after posting bond and is set to be arraigned next month.
