Bridgeport houses named endangered historic place

BRIDGEPORT -

The National Trust for Historic Preservation designated the site of the Mary and Eliza Freeman Houses as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

The houses were built by African-Americans in 1848 and provide a look into life prior to emancipation.

The announcement means that these houses will be saved.

Maisa Tisdale, president of the Mary and Eliza Freeman Center, said, “The places of the settlements of free people of color in the early 1800s, they don't exist anymore. This is the last of its kind. These houses are witness to a history that no one knows about and that everyone should be proud of."
