Weekend run to honor softball player who died of cancer

MILFORD -

Hundreds of runners will hit the pavement in Milford this weekend to celebrate the life of a young athlete and raise awareness about the incurable cancer she battled.

Danni Kemp graduated from Milford's Foran High School in 2015. It'll be the site of the Dash for Danni 5K Run and Walk this Saturday.

Kemp was a star softball player at Foran, and then went on to play Division 1 softball at Stony Brook University on Long Island. Kemp was home for the summer in 2016, playing summer ball with the Brakettes, when she was hit in the head by a pitch. She thought she had a concussion, but doctors diagnosed her with a rare inoperable brain tumor known as diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, or DIPG.

Kemp's courage and fight inspired people in the community and beyond, but she lost her fight last year at age 19.

The funds from the 5K will go toward DIPG research and helping families affected by the disease.

The run begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Registration closes at midnight but reopens on race day.
