Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says he has evidence showing that a man accidentally shot himself last month and was not killed by someone else.

Perez says he has the gun with which 34-year-old Tavon Cooper shot himself. Cooper was at a memorial June 21 at the PT Barnum housing complex for his nephew who had recently died.

Police say Cooper was upset, drinking and driving his car while holding a loaded gun. And when he possibly went over a bump, Perez says the gun went off and Cooper was hit in the head, killing him.

"We have submitted all the paperwork to the medical examiner, and we are confident that he's gonna rule that this was an accidental shooting," Perez says.

Police say they arrested 22-year-old Aushon Carr for shooting at Cooper's car but are not charging him with his death. He was being held on a $500,000 bond.

Police are waiting to get more information from the medical examiner's report.
