Southampton to install 40 surveillance cameras in parks

Southampton Town has approved the purchase of 40 surveillance cameras that will be installed in different locations in the area.
Police Chief Steven Skrynecki says the cameras, which cost more than $200,000, will help officers during investigations. They are slated to be installed at Wildwood Lake Park, Ponquogue Beach and Red Creek Park.
“Having some surveillance cameras in these parks will give our investigators…the ability to look at that video and get some leads,” he said.
The chief says they are working to get the cameras up as soon as possible, hopefully by the end of the summer.
The ACLU told News 12 it's "concerned about what we see in Southampton." It says the plan should have gone to residents for a public vote.
