DOT forced to close William Cribari Bridge due to structural problems

WESTPORT -

A historic swing bridge in Westport is set to close for six weeks due to structural problems that were discovered by Department of Transportation officials.

Westport residents use the William Cribari Bridge to cross the Saugatuck River. The bridge will be closed staring July 30 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday evenings through Monday mornings while it undergoes necessary repairs.

DOT officials alerted the town that repairs were needed to maintain the safety and stability of the existing structure. While under construction, the bridge will be closed overnight to all car and pedestrian traffic.

Local business owners say they're happy the problems were caught before they become more serious, but they are worried how it will impact business.

The owner of Match Burger Lobster says the work cuts into their business hours.

The construction may also limit marine traffic or boats that require the bridge to be opened.

DOT officials say the long-term future of the bridge is still being discussed. Alternate routes and detours will be posted during construction, and officials advise everyone to plan ahead.
