Bridgeport family looks to pick up the pieces after house fire

BRIDGEPORT -

A Bridgeport family who lost everything but the clothes on their back in a house fire spoke to News 12 Saturday about the ordeal.

Betty Profit and her family are temporarily staying at a friend's house on Wilmot Avenue. Profit says she is still reeling from what she describes as the most traumatic experience of her life.

Profit, along with her son and grandson, say they lost everything when a fire broke out on the second floor of their multifamily home in the 400 block of Wilmot Avenue Monday afternoon.

Nobody was seriously injured in the fire.

The single, working mom says she is grateful to Perez Tire Center on Nolton Street for helping her family with a $500 donation.

“It's time for everyone to get together when there's a tragedy and help Bridgeport move forward and get back to the way Bridgeport used to be," said Joey Colon, of Perez Tire Center.

The family has a long way to go to get back on their feet, but Profit says she feels very fortunate.

"I'm still alive and I thank God that we're not making arrangements for a funeral," she said.
