The issue of “ghost guns” is taking center stage during the race for Connecticut's next governor.

Ghost guns are parts of guns that can be ordered in a kit and assembled at home. They are unregistered and cannot be traced with a serial number.

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says he is asking the Bridgeport City Council to pass emergency legislation to ban ghost guns.

Ganim's ban would also apply to guns made on a 3D printer.

Ned Lamont, another candidate for governor, says he wants ghost guns to be banned statewide through an executive order while campaigning in Bridgeport Thursday.

Republican candidates Mark Boughton, Bob Stefanowski and Tim Herbst have not commented on the issue, while David Stemerman and Steve Obsitnik say a state ban is unnecessary because federal law already prohibits unregistered guns.

GOP lawmakers argued earlier this year that this is simply a hobby, and banning it infringes on people's Second Amendment rights.

Ganim plans to introduce the ban on ghost guns and 3D printed guns at a special Bridgeport City Council meeting on Monday.
