Fairfield University hosts GOP gubernatorial candidates

FAIRFIELD -

A little more than a week ahead of the state's primary elections, the five Republican candidates for governor took the stage at Fairfield University hoping to sway undecided voters.

The economy served as the forum's theme, and the candidates went into detail about their platforms.

Taxes came up as an important topic.

The party-endorsed candidate, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, joined businessman Bob Stefanowski to call for an end to the state's income tax.

"Not only can we get rid of the state income tax, we have to get rid of the state income tax," Stefanowski said.

Former Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst countered with a suggestion to eliminate the state income tax only for people earning less than $75,000 a year.

The remaining two candidates, Steve Obsitnik and David Stemerman, said they preferred other strategies.
