Republican gubernatorial candidate David Stemerman met with voters Wednesday at the Fairfield train station.

He says transportation is one of the biggest issues facing the state, especially commuting to and from New York City on Metro-North.

Stemerman’s transportation plan includes increasing train speeds and making improvements to bridges and rails, leading to rides to Grand Central being 30 minutes from Stamford, 45 minutes from Bridgeport, and an hour from New Haven.

Stemerman said, “When I tell them we can get the train here in 45 minutes, their eyes light up. If you think about what this means to people, people here are commuting into New York City, this means more time with their family, it means for their property values, one of the reasons the property values are declining here in Fairfield is that train time is longer than an hour.”

Stemerman will face off in the Republican primary on Tuesday against Mark Boughton, Tim Herbst, Steve Obsitnik, and Bob Stefanowski.
