Police caution public after car strikes mother and child

Bridgeport police are warning drivers and pedestrians to be more careful on the road after a car hit a mother and child Thursday evening at a gas station on Park Avenue and State Street.
News 12 Connecticut is told the mother and son were rushed to Bridgeport Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way.
"People are not paying attention to what they're doing," says Police Chief AJ Perez. "They're either on the phone or they're listening to music, or they're texting."
The warning comes as police say there has been a recent uptick in similar accidents involving pedestrians, some of which have been fatal.
Earlier this week, a pedestrian was struck by a car at the same location. Residents say the intersection at Park Avenue and State Street has been the site of many accidents.
Police say they'll be cracking down on distracted drivers beginning this weekend.
