For the first time in five years, parking meter rates are rising in the borough.
Manhattan will see the biggest fare hikes for certain areas. Core areas in outer-boroughs will see an increase from $1 to $2. Other neighborhood corridors will go up from $1 to $1.50. The remaining areas will need another quarter to pay for parking.
Many people in the area are unhappy with the news.
"I mean parking right now is kind of hectic," said Prince Robinson. "You know what I mean? And to go up and make it more hectic and then get into people's pockets is ridiculous." It's better to just take the train. The MetroCard price aren't any better."
Payment options will stay the same. Coins, credit and debit cards and the ParkNYC app are all viable ways to pay for parking.
The Department of Transportation responded by telling News 12 that "parking meters play a critical role in providing an efficient street network, allowing for the efficient delivery of goods and services--as well as providing curb turnover as a resource for customers to access storefront businesses."
