Acclaimed teacher Jahana Hayes defeated Mary Glassman in the Democratic primary to replace Rep. Elizabeth Esty in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District Tuesday -- and across the aisle former Meriden Mayor Manny Santos won the GOP nod.
Esty announced in April that she would not seek a fourth term in office after she received criticism for her handling of sexual harassment claims.
Hayes grew up in a public housing complex in Waterbury and became pregnant as a teenager. Then she grew up to become National Teacher of the Year in 2016 and decided to run for office with some encouragement from Sen. Chris Murphy.
Glassman had the state Democratic Party's official endorsement, but Hayes' story proved popular in a year of nontraditional candidates.
If elected in November, Hayes would become the first black woman elected to Congress from Connecticut.
Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
