New Haven police make arrest after dozens of overdoses

Posted: Updated:
NEW HAVEN -

New Haven police have made an arrest after they say about 30 people overdosed on possibly tainted drugs over the past 24 hours.

Most of the overdoses occurred Wednesday morning on the New Haven Green. Three of them happened Tuesday night.

New Haven's fire chief says the victims apparently used a synthetic form of marijuana, possibly K2, that had been laced with something. They are still awaiting toxicology tests to confirm the exact substance.

The fire chief says the department responds to overdose calls daily, but they've never seen so many within such a short span of time.

As of Wednesday evening, police have not identified the suspect. The police chief says they firmly believe the person in custody is responsible for at least some of the overdoses.

Police say there haven't been any deaths linked to the overdoses, although two people were hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities have increased their presence on the New Haven Green.
