Police say bystanders shattered a car window in the Melville Mall parking lot Friday to rescue two dogs trapped inside.
The shopping center is located along Route 110.
Allison Monaco says she climbed into the Jeep to retrieve the dogs, named Daisy and Damon, according to their tags. She says the dogs were panting and lethargic when she removed them.
"You cannot leave your dogs in a hot car," says Monaco, who runs Jake's Rescue Ranch. "I see this all the time and it's just not right."
Police say the dogs were in good condition when they were taken from the Jeep.
The dogs' owner, who only identified herself as Bella, says she returned to her car to find her window shattered and her dogs gone. After News 12 spoke with her, police handcuffed her and put her in the back of a squad car.
Although the woman was detained for a while, News 12 saw her drive off in her vehicle without her dogs.
The dogs were taken away by Suffolk County police.
