Most Milford Public Schools students began their new school year on Monday.
West Shore Middle School has been undergoing renovations for about two years. A new gym, music room and media center made their debut Monday.
Dr. Anna Cutaia will serve as the new superintendent following Dr. Elizabeth Feser's retirement after seven years with the district.
Along with the hustle-and-bustle of the first day back, comes safety concerns from both parents and staff. Cutaia says emergency drills are a priority this week.
"While we think our students and staff have been doing this for a while, they've been off the summer, so it's really important that we practice that immediately," says Cutaia.
Officials say the district has five school resource officers in place at the high schools and middle schools. A new alert system will also be rolled out this year.
