Bikers from as far as Virginia came out for the 18th annual Connecticut United Ride on Sunday.

The event seeks to ensure that 9/11 is never forgotten by raising money and awareness for first responders.

"The police departments, fire departments, EMS, they really do put their lives on the line every day for us and you know it's so we can enjoy events like this," said Rossell Ouellette of Norwalk.

This year was extra special for state police because Trooper First Class Walter Green died a few months ago from 9/11-related cancer.

"It means something to us as state troopers," said Sgt. Robert Derry. "So, we just wanted to come out here and extend our support to the operation."

Event organizers, first responders and a 9/11 survivor spoke in the tribute opening ceremony.

Police led the ride at 11:30 a.m. to remember those who didn't make it out alive.

The 60-mile motorcade made it through 10 towns in Fairfield County. It continuously ranks as the state's largest fundraiser for both fire and law enforcement.
