Norwalk has announced an on-demand transportation service that adds another way to get around the downtown area.
The idea behind the Wheels2U service is to have a ride-hailing app like Uber or Lyft for public transit. Funding for the project came from a partnership between multiple agencies, including the state Department of Transportation.
To use it, you must download the Microtransit app to your phone, request a pickup and drop-off location and watch as the shuttle approaches. There aren't specific routes like a traditional bus; instead there's a travel zone.
Officials say the travel zone includes the Wall Street area, South Norwalk and both train stations. They say Norwalk is among a small group of transit agencies across the country participating in pilot programs. This is the first of its kind in Connecticut.
Wheels2U will initially be free to riders. After a limited time, officials say a ride will cost about $2.
Service begins this Thursday. The shuttles run Thursday to Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
