Police: Bridgeport BOE member arrested after altercation with officer

BRIDGEPORT -

Police say a Bridgeport Board of Education member faces charges for interfering with an officer and resisting arrest.

Witnesses told police that 51-year-old Maria Pereira was recording a meeting of the Success Village board of directors Tuesday night on her cellphone when the meeting got out of hand and Pereira became belligerent.

According to the police report, Pereira, who was supporting someone who lives at Success Village Apartments, told police she had a right to be there. Police say when she was asked to leave the premises, she swung at them what turned out to be a cellphone.

Police say Pereira then continued to shout comments even after she was put inside a police cruiser.

Chaila Robinson, president of the parent advisory council for the Hallen School in Bridgeport, says Pereira's behavior was poor.

News 12 did not immediately hear back from Pereira for comment. She's also being charged with criminal trespass and breach of peace.
