Bridgeport police install special team at violent intersection

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGEPORT -

Bridgeport police are cracking down on one of the city's most violent street corners.

A special team of officers will be stationed 24 hours a day over a quarter-mile radius near Stratford and Union avenues.

It was back in February that two men opened fired with assault-style weapons at the Sunshine Deli. Several people were injured.

Then last month, a man was killed and a woman was critically injured after a passer-by took aim at their car.

Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says he made the decision himself to assign the team of officers to the intersection.

"Crime -- and I don't want to jinx myself -- has really gone down and it's because of the fine work done by the men and women of the Bridgeport Police Department," says Perez.

Perez says the stepped up enforcement will continue through at least the end of the year.

City Council members Eneida Martinez and Ernie Newton say they applaud the effort and support a measure that would do even more by limiting nighttime hours for businesses with a history of attracting violent crime.
