Long Island's Catholic diocese has reportedly paid large settlements for alleged priest abuse.
The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s special compensation program co-administrator told Newsday that nearly 300 men and women have received money since the program started last fall.
Some victims' lawyers say the awards range from about $25,000 to $500,000 each.
In exchange, the victims agreed not to sue the church.
This comes as every New York diocese is under state investigation for its handling of child-abuse claims.
As News 12 has reported, Rockville Centre Bishop John Barres was named in the massive Pennsylvania report on priest abuse and cover-ups.
However, Barres says that state report is wrong for saying he covered up for a priest when he was bishop of Allentown.
