Officials: Bridgeport Columbus Day parade moving to Shelton

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGEPORT -

Bridgeport's 110-year-old Columbus Day parade will be moving to Shelton, according to parade officials.

They say they simply could not afford to pay the roughly $17,000 in police overtime required to run the event.

Parade officials say the city denied their request for a parade permit due to "financial considerations," telling them the city could no longer shell out for police overtime. They say it was with a heavy heart they decided to move the event to Shelton, whose mayor offered to host it without requiring payment.

A city spokesperson said in a statement:

"The city has made every effort since 2017 to work with the Columbus Day Parade Committee to continue to keep the parade in Bridgeport. We have been supportive of the parade...and have offered means for them to meet the cost of police, security, and public facilities operations to ensure a safe and successful event. We are looking forward to hosting an Italian American Festival in Bridgeport Columbus Day weekend to honor the tradition."
