Gov. Phil Murphy announced this week plans for two large, offshore wind turbine farms for New Jersey.
New Jersey currently only has one wind turbine farm that’s located in Atlantic City. It was built in 2005.
The first of the planned offshore wind farms could start construction in 2020 and is expected to generate 11 megawatts of power.
The Atlantic City wind farm currently generates 7.5 megawatts, which is enough to power 2,500 homes. The farm only has five turbines, but saves an estimated 11,964 barrels of crude oil per year.
“As you can see this has worked very successfully here on shore. Offshore wind farms are even more productive and efficient and produce more energy because it is windier there,” says Atlantic County Utilities Authority president Rick Dovey.
For those who are wondering how wind farms work if there is no wind for the day, the facility in Atlantic City also has a parking deck covered in solar panels.
The governor says that it is his goal to have New Jersey running solely on clean energy by 2050.
Bidding for the offshore wind farm project will open up on Sept. 20 and close Dec. 28.
