Police in Tenafly say that a pair of would-be home invaders were scared away by a teenage girl.
The 13-year-old girl’s family says that she was woken up by the house alarm going off. They says that she thought it was a false alarm, but when she went to turn the alarm off, she found two men standing in her home.
"When she came in these two men were standing there with the baseball bats and the crowbars. They looked at each other… My daughter took off,” says mother Jennifer Yanowitz.
Yanowitz says that it happened Saturday around 9:30 a.m. She has just run out to get breakfast for her 13- and 11-year-old daughters. Her husband and son were already out at soccer.
Yanowitz says that her daughters hid in a closet, but the 13-year-old was able to get a look at the men, and provided police with a description. It is believed that a third man was a getaway driver in a Dodge Magnum with New York license plates.
Another suspect is caught on a home security camera ringing the doorbell to see if anyone is home. He is seen wearing blue shorts and grey sneakers.
Yanowitz says that the family plans on improving their home security.
"Getting a nice big dog. The police say that is the best thing you can do. My children have been begging me for a dog for I don't know how long,” she says.
Any one may have any information about the crime is asked to contact Tenafly police at 201-568-5100.
