Representatives at the town meeting in Westport Tuesday night voted against adding two school resource officers to two middle schools in the area.
The board of finance previously denied the first selectman's request to approve $185,000 to the police overtime account to find two school resource officers in September.
Residents and school officials at the meeting say they were hoping the representatives would vote to overturn that decision, but it failed by a few votes.
The board questioned why they would approve funding for two officers when only one of the middle schools is open.
Coleytown Middle School students have been moved to Bedford Middle School due to mold issues.
Parents say a higher concentration of students in one school is just another reason for police presence, so they'd like to see the issue revisited.
In Westport, Staples High School is the only school in the district to have a school resource officer.
