A confrontation in Freeport early Tuesday morning led to two arrests after a bullet fragment struck a home with two children inside.
Police say 37-year-old Justise Jones fired the weapon during an argument with 25-year-old Melquan Abernathy.
Investigators say the incident happened at Jones' house on Lena Avenue around 1:45 a.m. According to court documents, the violence started as a domestic dispute.
Authorities say the mother of Abernathy's son lives at the house, and that Jones did not want Abernathy there. Police say the argument became physical, and eventually Abernathy allegedly broke down the door to the home. In response, Jones is accused of firing a shotgun into the ground.
Authorities say nobody was injured, but one shell fragment hit a house across the street where a family, including two children, was sleeping.
That home also operates as a day care center.
Jones’ lawyer said whatever allegedly happened during the incident was done out of self-defense.
Jones was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. His bail was set at $30,000. Abernathy was charged with trespassing and possession of marijuana. His bond was set at $2,000.
