City takes steps to combat NYCHA rat problem

The city’s Department of Health has taken action to address the NYCHA rat problem that tenants have been dealing with.
News 12 reported earlier this week that tenants at the Claremont Consolidated Apartments have lived with enormous rats that could be heard through the walls and ceilings inside the buildings.
News 12 was back at the apartments Friday where crews were going from building to building, informing tenants where to put their garbage.
The city’s DOH says it completed an exterior inspection of the property on Oct. 16 and observed six rat burrows “in the landscape area under flowerpots, non-rodent proof doors in the building and a structural opening in the base of the wall at the right side of the building.”
The health department says it will conduct a joint inspection with NYCHA next week.
