Zeldin defeats Gershon in 1st Congressional District re-election bid

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin has defeated Democratic challenger Perry Gershon in his re-election bid for the 1st Congressional District.
Zeldin is a veteran politician who has aligned himself as a close ally of President Donald Trump and touts his legislative success.
Gershon is a political newcomer who said he was motivated to jump into politics after being disillusioned by the direction the current administration is taking the country. He conceded his race shortly after 11 p.m.
Zeldin told News 12 Long Island that no matter what the polls say, he always campaigns as if he's the underdog.
Republicans outnumber Democrats in the 1st Congressional District, but it has historically been a swing district on Long Island. The district narrowly voted for former President Barack Obama twice and overwhelmingly voted for Trump in 2016.
