Election changes balance of power in NY Senate

Democrats have taken control of the New York State Senate.
The formerly Republican-held Senate was the only check on Democratic power in state government.
Before the election, there were 32 Democrats in the state Senate, compared to 31 Republicans. Republicans said Long Islanders would suffer if that power structure changes.
But Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Long Island Democrats said a Senate power shift would allow the state to pass laws shielding New Yorkers from controversial Trump administration policies and provide a fresh look on a whole host of issues, including taxes.
