Police shot and killed a Manahawkin man Monday afternoon after he attacked a police dog, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities say that law enforcement officers were executing a warrant for the arrest of 39-year-old Edward Walsh. Walsh allegedly attacked his girlfriend and stole her car Sunday.
Investigators say that they received reliable information that Walsh was staying at a home in Mantoloking.
Officers with the Mantoloking Police Department, Bay Head Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home on the 900 block of Barnegat Lane around 11:45 a.m. Monday. Officials say that the officers spent 45 minutes trying to get Walsh to come out of the home. They eventually went inside the home and found Walsh armed with a knife, according to officials.
Authorities say that the officers commanded Walsh to drop the knife and when he wouldn’t, they say that Ocean County Sheriff K9 Officer Kane was released to subdue Walsh.
Police say that Walsh attacked the police dog with the knife, and that’s when officers shot Walsh. Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene. He also had a self-inflicted knife wound across his neck, according to officials.
K9 Officer Kane was taken to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and is expected to be OK.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office will investigate the use of deadly force, which is required by state law.
