Rangers rescue man from SUV that plunged into frigid Islip canal

The Town of Islip says rangers rescued a man from an SUV that plunged into a frigid canal on Thursday.
It happened around 6:30 a.m. in the West Bayberry Canal, off Ocean Avenue in Islip. Fire Chief Tom Butler says the SUV driver made the 911 call himself.
Islip park rangers Anthony LaGrasta and Jonathan Rivera heard the call come in and responded to the scene. They say the male driver extricated himself from the vehicle and called for help but became unresponsive. He floated about 50 feet away from the car.
The driver and both officers were treated at a hospital for hypothermia.
There was no word on how the driver lost control. Officials say they don't expect the man to face criminal charges.
