Riverdale residents say they're frustrated with chronic trash problems in their neighborhood.
Vittorio Bugatti, who has been living in Riverdale for about a decade, says trash in his neighborhood has been a major problem for at least the past two years. He says people dump their personal trash outside and garbage overflow.
Bugatti says a step street by Johnson Avenue is usually so packed with trash, it's hard for people to get up and down the stairs.
"It's infuriating as a resident whose been here for a long time to see this because I know this wasn't the case just a couple years ago," Bugatti says.
News 12 found trash spilling out onto the sidewalk on West 232nd Street and Johnson Avenue.
Residents say they're also concerned that the garbage might bring rats.
The Department of Sanitation tells News 12 The Bronx they will investigate these locations and recommend appropriate action.
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz says in a statement that "This visual blight, whether on a step street or in a vacant lot or in our parks or wherever, is disheartening and does not reflect the pride we should have in our community. The unfortunate reality is that even a few people can have a disproportionate impact on a neighborhood's cleanliness."
He also says the DSNY typically does a good job at responding to complaints, although they can't be everywhere at all times.
Dinowitz says he hopes to see more sanitation services in the northwest section of the Bronx.
