Police: Husband head-butted state trooper; wife later threw dirty underwear

A Long Beach couple faces a slew of charges following a traffic stop over the weekend.
The incident happened on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 21. State police say they pulled over 38-year-old Michael Nelson and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Nelson allegedly head-butted a state trooper multiple times while his wife, 29-year-old Alexandra Nelson, allegedly tried to prevent him from being taken into custody. She was also arrested.
An attorney for the couple says Mr. Nelson was unable to do a field sobriety test because of recent surgery to his left leg.
Once the couple was taken to state police barracks, Mrs. Nelson is accused of spitting at and then throwing her shoes and dirty underwear at troopers. The couple's attorney says troopers refused to let her use the restroom.
Michael Nelson poked his head out of of their apartment Monday afternoon when News 12 rang the doorbell, but he slammed the door without answering questions. A woman inside the apartment said she was calling police.
Mrs. Nelson is a pre-K teacher at Lido Elementary School. Her husband works for a company that provides litigation support for attorneys.
Both Nelsons were released on bail. They're due back in court Jan. 16.
