Officials say two people were shot during a massive house party at a foreclosed home in a quiet Old Westbury neighborhood, and a News 12 reporter discovered what appeared to be a handgun and bottles of alcohol near the scene hours later.
The gunfire rang out around 3:15 a.m. on Pinetree Lane, a sparsely populated street lined with multimillion-dollar mansions.
The mayor of Old Westbury tells News 12 that the violence stemmed from a wild house party at a vacant, foreclosed home. Police say there were about 100 people in attendance.
Two people were shot, and Nassau investigators say they were taken to the hospital. Their exact conditions are not known at this time, and they have not been identified.
Officers who responded to the scene say they set up a road block, but one car sped by in an attempt to flee. Police say they chased that vehicle, and it eventually crashed on a Long Island Expressway exit ramp nearby.
Four occupants of the vehicle were arrested. It's unclear if any of them are the suspected shooter.
Hours after the shooting, a News 12 Long Island crew spotted what appeared to be a handgun in the driveway of a home down the street from where the shooting happened. They informed police, who swarmed the scene and were overheard confirming that it was in fact the weapon they were seeking.
News 12 also spotted several bottles of alcohol littering the block.
Neighbors on the normally quiet street were shocked to hear about the gun violence in their area.
The shooting comes four months after someone else was shot at another out-of-control bash in Dix Hills. Old Westbury Mayor Fred Carillo says he believes the same group is responsible for both parties.
“There was something on the internet stating there was a party, Gold Coast mansion. Most of the people, I think, came from Brooklyn,” he says.
